Vasota Fort, also known as Vyaghragad (Fort of the Tiger), is a remote and majestic hill fort situated within the Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary in the Satara district of Maharashtra. What makes Vasota truly unique among Sahyadri treks is the journey itself — the adventure begins with a scenic boat ride across the emerald-green Shivsagar Lake (the backwaters of Koyna Dam), followed by a jungle trek through one of Maharashtra's richest wildlife corridors. The Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is home to leopards, Indian bison (gaur), barking deer, giant Malabar squirrels, and over 250 species of birds, making this trek a dual adventure of history and wildlife. The fort itself, standing at 1,171 metres, was a strategic stronghold during the Maratha Empire and offers spectacular views of the surrounding dense forests and the shimmering Shivsagar Lake below. At the summit, you will explore ancient water cisterns, crumbling bastions, and the remains of old temples that speak to centuries of history.
